4 Tips For Saving Money On Heating Oil

If you use oil to heat your home with, there are a variety of ways that you can save money on oil costs this winter. Here are a few different ways to decrease the overall money you end up spending on oil this winter.

#1 Have Your Boiler Inspected

One area where you can lose a lot of the heat that your oil is generating for you is directly from your boiler itself. Although your boiler can work well for a long period of time without a lot of maintenance on your part, if you want your boiler to work as effectively as possible, you should have your boiler serviced on a yearly basis.

When your boiler is serviced, your technician can take care of any maintenance needs that would reduce the efficiency of your boiler. They can also check for areas where heat may be lost from your heating system, and take steps to reduce that loss.

#2 Order Large Quantities Of Oil

Although it may feel like you are saving money when you order small quantities of oil, the reality is that you are spending less money upfront, but are costing yourself more money in the long run.

Regardless of the quantity of oil that you are having delivered, you still have to pay the same delivery fee. If you get five small deliveries instead of one large delivery, for example, you are paying the delivery costs four additional times. This is a waste of money. Instead, order the maximum amount of oil that your tank can hold in order to get the most for your money.

#3 Don't Run Out Of Oil

You also need to keep a close eye on your tank. You should not allow your tank to get completely dry before ordering oil again. You will then waste oil when you have to bleed your system to get it going again. You will also have to use more energy to get your home back to your desired temperature again to make up for all the heat that was lost while your system was down.

#4 Heat The Rooms You Use

Finally, your entire house does not have to be warm. If you never go down into the basement during the winter months, or you don't use the spare room, you don't need to spend energy and thus money heating those rooms.

Instead, close the vents in those rooms. You should also keep the door closed as well to prevent the cold from your unheated rooms from seeping into your heated rooms.

If you take the four steps above, you should be able to reduce the amount of money that you spend on oil to heat your room this winter by changing how you order oil, and by rectifying the different ways heat is lost from your home. Contact a company like Anderson's Propane for more information.
